Shirley Sherrod, Tom Vilsack, Cheryl Cook and the Actual Emails

It’s back . . . Nothing stays buried in DC . . .

Through the use of the Freedom of Information Act comes the continuing saga of the knee-jerk reaction at the US Department of Agriculture this past summer.

E-mails show knee-jerk firing of Ag official Sherrod

Tribune Washington bureau

WASHINGTON – Obama administration officials knew they did not have all the facts last summer when they rushed to dismiss Shirley Sherrod from the Agriculture Department after learning of a video that painted her as a racist, newly released e-mails show.

The day after Sherrod’s ouster, even as USDA officials acknowledged in internal memos that they had not seen the full video, a White House senior aide e-mailed them to commend the department for moving quickly so the story would not gain “traction.”

As it turned out, Sherrod had been falsely accused, and the actions taken by Agriculture Secretary Thomas Vilsack and his senior staff became a major embarrassment for the Obama administration, raising questions about its basic competence and its preoccupation with public perceptions.

Hundreds of pages of e-mails released under the Freedom of Information Act provide a detailed look at how the administration handled the Sherrod case, an episode that culminated in apologies from Vilsack and President Obama.

October 1969 | The Unveiling of the American Myth

Outstanding documentary . . .

This era, when I was in my early to mid-20s will never fade from my memory and will stay with me to my grave.

The key to what this documentary has left with me are the following words.

“If the American people knew the truth about how they had been lied to, about the myths that had led them to endorse this butchery for twenty-five years that they would choose against it. And the risk you take when you do that is that you’ll learn something ultimately about your fellow citizens that you won’t like to hear. And that is, that they hear it, they learn from it, they understand it and they proceed to ignore it.”

Those are the words of Daniel Ellsberg. The Most Dangerous Man in American

Here is the official PBS POV trailer at YouTube.

Watch the documentary in it’s entirety here at PBS POV video online.

Also: As Ellsberg stated, and this is exactly how I originally felt and still feel about the Iraq war from the very beginning:

“The hundreds of thousands we were killing was unjustified homicide and I couldn’t see the difference between that and murder.”

And I realize this may raise a few hackles, but the ongoing continuance of our involvement in Afghanistan is no different.

Meg “Ms. Money-Bags” Whitman, Nanny-Gate, and Polygraph Tests

More from the Golden Shores . . .

For quite a few years I’ve always enjoyed the slant that Steve Lopez from the LA Times can put on a story.

Yesterday he wrote in his column the following :

The more I see Meg Whitman in action, the more I find myself rooting for her to become the next governor of California. So when Whitman said she’d submit to a lie detector test to prove she had no idea an illegal immigrant was in her home for nine years, I lined up a polygraph expert. Work with me, Meg. I want to clear your name.

Of course Lopez goes on to explain why he’s actually rooting for Whitman.

Whitman and Jerry Brown hold some key policy differences, and they were on display in Tuesday night’s first debate. Brown seemed to have a better grasp of reality that night, but in the days that followed, evidence mounted that Whitman just might be a columnist’s dream.

Yup! Who would be more interesting for a columnist to write about over the next four years? Bland old Jerry — or oops-a-minute Meg? No contest… Eh?

In a serious vein I will say that Lopez’s piece did get me really thinking about the past nine-months and my intuitive take of Whitman’s run for the office.

See … I don’t give a hoot whether Ms. Whitman takes some polygraph test or not.

I don’t give a hoot if she told all of us California citizens that she’s the most recent incarnation of the Buddha. Nope.

What I have noticed and what others should also notice is which questions Meg dodges and what tangents she goes off on when presented with a question of relative substance.

You can get a taste of her abilities to slip-and-slide in this video of the first debate here from UC Davis on Sept. 28.

Those dodges and tangents make me think that Meg’s ability to capitalize on the economic chaos, the current uncertainty of our state’s future, combined with the political discontent of the current historical moment can be explained in large part by the following:

  • I have a sinking suspicion she has a whole pile of garbage that hasn’t floated to the top from her professional cesspool she wishes to keep covered.

What better way to erect a firewall from further scrutiny than to attain the office of governor?

I see her claims that she’s honest to the core, thoroughly business like, and eminently concerned to promote in all proper ways the public good is 60% folderol, 30% twaddle, and 10% as an elitist’s view of us mere mortals as economic targets to be exploited.

What does it really take to serve as governor?

Priority #1: Only through a true commitment to service for the best interests of all the citizens of California can an individual guarantee the independence they need to step up and protect the interests of the general public against the greed and fly-by-night tax cheats and short-term profit greed-merchants.

The problem as I see it with Ms. Whitman, no matter how hard she tries to sell it she can’t really guarantee that independence from those types of interests when her entire lifetime background shows she’s one of ’em.

Personally, there’s no need for a polygraph test to verify the reasons for my opinion.

California: Jerry “Mr. Pauper” Brown vs Meg “Ms. Money Bags” Whitman

For those who are wondering or worrying …

The final 30 day push has begun in earnest in the governor’s race in California.

Yesterday the Brown camp started running the first two of a coming series of TV ads. You can view both of them over here at the TPM Café Castaways Yuku site.

While Brown’s ads run, the Whitman camp as most folks already know have been attempting to beat back the brouhaha over the families ex-housekeeper situation.

But what is really brewing under the radar is the quick rise over the past two weeks since Labor Day of Jerry Brown’s chances of taking the top spot. And this is not due to the recent Whitman/housekeeper situation. According to Nate Silver’s modeling of the race things have abruptly changed.

In Nate’s words:

“Mr. Brown is now a 60 percent favorite to win, according to the model; two weeks ago, Ms. Whitman, the Republican nominee, had been almost a 2-to-1 favorite.”

You can view some very interesting numbers over here at the TPM Café Castaways Yuku site and note the part about:

  • “The chance that each candidate will win based on 100,000 simulations with random variation in the local and national political environment..”

There can be little doubt that the outcome of this race is still up in the air.

The real key as always is, Get Out The vote!

Protecting a Bully? Tell Us It Isn't So Senator Saxby Chambliss

Where does this “Faggots Must Die” issue currently stand?

It basically stands the same place it was last Tuesday… Maybe Saxby’s crew is having a hard time finding a anti-American, Reagan hating, leftie-liberal-pinko-socialist-commie-fascist  cross-dressing “faggot”  as a stand-in for taking the fall who “hacked” the email service.

You think I’m kidding?

But on the serious side.

As I had posted as an update in my previous thread here at Once Upon a TPM:

From: Jim Galloway – Political Insider at the AtlantaJournal

“Saxby Chambliss says gay slur originated with his office.”

OK. So now, what’s the true identity of this individual named “Jimmy” who placed this comment “All Faggots Must Die” on Joe Jervis’ blog?

Now allow me to explain why I deem it necessary to get this all out in the open.

On one hand, I would never deny the right to freedom of expression for this individual. I deem that a basic right of utmost importance for others to express themselves. Especially when it comes to denigrating others in a hateful manner within our society. It allows us all to be aware and forewarned as to the base nature of such a person who would basically verbally bully others under the cloak of anonymity.

On the other hand, although that person does have the right to express themselves it doesn’t allow them a right to privacy when working in the capacity of a governmental agent or agency such as the local Georgia Senate offices of Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss.

So where does this issue stand as of today with Chambliss? As reported at The GA Voice | Atlanta Gay & Lesbian News & Events

“We have seen the allegations and are moving quickly to understand the facts. This office has not and will not tolerate any activity of the sort alleged,” Chambliss spokeswoman Bronwyn Lance Chester told Galloway. “Once we have ascertained whether these claims are true, we will take the appropriate steps.”

That was last Tuesday.

So … If there’s anyone out there looking to pick up a few Gs for a part-time acting job maybe you should contact the Senate office there in Georgia and see, what’s wiggling fire-chief?

In the meantime… SAXBY … Hey SAXBY!

I’m Waiting . . .

Sheesh … "All Faggots Must Die" ???

Talking about …  “going forward into the past” ??

Some very interesting internet sleuthing going on out there in bloggerland in relationship to the DADT issue.

From: Joe. My. God. at . . .

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

“All Faggots Must Die”

The above comment was left today by “Jimmy” on my post about the DADT cloture vote. The IP address *appears* to resolve to the neighborhood of GOP U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss’ Atlanta office. The ISP is “United States Senate.” I’m confident that the JMG internet sleuths can get to the source.

Here’s the IP: Get busy, geeks!

UPDATE: According to a friend of JMG reader Sean Chapin, the comment appears to have actually come from the Atlanta office of Sen. Johnny Isakson, the OTHER Republican Senator in Georgia, whose offices are not far from Sen. Chambliss’. Dennis writes:

To view the rest of this post you can either go to the mirror of the entire post at  TPM Café Castaways @ Yuku or go directly to Joe. My. God. at . . .

I’ll be keeping an eye peeled on the further developments of this one.

Boehner Proposal Would Slash Spending for NIH Research on Cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Diabetes folks… Nice site . . .

Somehow I’m not even surprised about that type of headline.

If you wish to read the entire report you will find a copy of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities Report over at the Yuku TPM Café Castaways site. This is the direct link to the blog post.

But as I said before, none of this crazy-talk is surprising in the least. Afterall I have no expectations that anything is going to change that comes out of the whacky-doodles.  I mean take a look at ol’  Huckleberry Huckabee jacking his jaw at the Value Voters Summit against insurance coverage for those who have pre-existing conditions. As reported by Brian Beutler over TPMDC, here’s how Brian reported the Huckster’s cornpone point:

“Suppose we applied that principle [to] our property insurance. And you can call your insurance agent and say, “I’d like to buy some insurance for my house.” He’d say, “Tell me about your house.” “Well sir, it burned down yesterday, but I’d like to insure it today.” And he’ll say “I’m sorry, but we can’t insure it after it’s already burned.” Well, no preexisting conditions.”

Here’s the audio from Media Matters
