Always an Answer for Everything

I was curious yesterday why Paradigm was so unresponsive. It was working but it was slow like molasses. Now I read where Word Press was the subject of a very seriuos DDoS attack. LINK

So far the source of the attack hasn’t been revealed by an attacker or discovered by authorities. The likely suspect mentioned is Anonymous. This is the same group which has launched many attacks of recent and has made a big fuss over a number of governments, including the U.S., getting crazy of late. Some of this has it’s genesis with the Wikileaks fracas.

This type of attack is very hard to combat. It is highly decentralized and not only cripples a site with a flood of traffic but can also have that traffic routed from points all over the world. Sort of like a circular firing squad where the persons doing the shooting don’t care if they lose a few of their own. The target gets it from all directions in a hail of digital bullets that is impossible to defend.

WordPress.com has suffered from a huge Distributed Denial of Service (DDos) attack, the service confirmed Thursday.

WordPress confirmed the attack in a blog post, specifying that it is being attacked at the rate of “multiple Gigabits per second and tens of millions of packets per second.” The blog post is unavailable but Naked Security captured it in a Twitpic.

“We are working to mitigate the attack, but because of the extreme size, it is proving rather difficult,” the company’s Sara Rosso wrote. “At this time, everything should be back to normal as the attack has subsided, but we are actively working with our upstream providers on measure to prevent such attacks from affecting connectivity going forward.”
